A roof for the Pope: Emons Spedition transports cloud roof for World Youth Day

01.08.2005 – When Pope Benedict XVI on 20 and 21 August welcomes the youth of the world assembled in Cologne, this will be done under a cloud roof which the international logistics service provider Emons Spedition has loaded in Castelnuovo Scrivia, located 100 kilometres south of Milan, and delivered to Marienfeld near Kerpen.

The roof was taken over as scheduled on 25 July and delivered on time directly to the construction site on 28 July with the daily traffic via Milan and Cologne. The transport was organized by Emons Impex Italiana and Emons Spedition in Cologne. The roof consists of an air-filled “cloud” and its fixing columns. Weighing more than 65 tons, with a length of 32 metres, a width of 39 metres and a height of 20 metres, it will be installed on the 10-metre-high altar hill.

The “mountain of the 70 nations”, as Cologne’s archbishop Joachim Kardinal Meisner referred to the hill, is at the centre of Marienfeld, which measures some 300 hectares. Among other things, Benedict XVI will be celebrating the final service of the World Youth Day here on 20 and 21 August. This event is expected to attract about 800,000 visitors.
