Definite order increase at Emons Spedition
24.08.2006 - The growth sector logistics has evolved into Germany’s third largest line of business after trade and the automotive industry. The logistics sector reports above-average rises in order intake and sales revenue. Emons has participated in this growth and – taking an average of the most recent months relative to the same period of last year – has posted an over 20% increase in orders. With a view to stabilizing the familiar high quality standards in such quantity rises, Emons Spedition has responded with a comprehensive programme of capacity expansions.
Ever since the mid-1990s, the logistics sector has seen a stimulation of business in all sub-markets. The German transport and logistics sector is growing in terms of both sales revenue and headcount. According to a report of the Handelsblatt journal dated 8 February 2006, Deutsche Industriebank AG (IKB) puts the sector’s sales revenue at € 150 billion for the year 2006. This accounts for all of 7% of Germany’s GDP and is almost evenly distributed between companies’ internal works logistics and external transport and logistics firms. With an estimated 2.6 million employees, the sector is also said to be an important engine helping drive the labour market.
This expansion is due to growth in international goods traffic, which reflects, inter alia, globalization and the EU accession of Eastern European countries, the outsourcing of logistics jobs by trade and industry, but also Germany’s central location and its comparably excellent infrastructure.
On the other hand, the sector’s rapid growth, the insolvency of many small forwarding and transport firms, and the fact that networks, warehouses and handling systems are working to capacity have led to sector-wide problems in processing order enquiries, in providing the demanded loading space and in product quality. This trend has also been accompanied by an increase in the prices for logistics services.
Emons, too, has not been able to buy an extra "wheel" on the market and has noted bottlenecks in warehousing and the vehicle fleet. Wilhelm Könntgen of the Emons Spedition management adds: "We have responded quickly to this challenge and optimized the Emons network and, where necessary, extended it. In warehousing and in our vehicle fleet, we have expanded our capacity and made operations more efficient. Thanks to the flexible shape of our network, we have an edge over the operationally rigid organization of hub structures among some of our competitors. In order to achieve our aim of optimally built up and utilized networks, we are currently setting up a further branch establishment in Baden-Württemberg. A high degree of customer satisfaction is a mark of successful companies in the long run and, hence an aim that Emons has rigorously pursued ever since the Company was set up in 1928."
